When you come to Can Tho, besides visiting floating market, local food tour is a must do when you have more time here and it won’t disappoint.
Each region of Vietnam has its own speciality dishes and the Mekong Delta is no exception. The area has a diverse population of Vietnamese, Khmer and Chinese settlers who all bring their own flavours to the table making Can Tho’s dishes a sensational fusion of all these regional tastes. At 6:00am, our tour guide will pick you up at hotel or meeting point (you confirm with us in advance).
Firstly, you will wander 10 minutes to the local restaurant and enjoy special strange foods which are frog and rat with some beer (or water). When we mentioning about rat, people may say: Really, you can it rat? Others will say: Nope, im good, thanks. But we are sure that you will like it because the rats here are caught from rice field. Therefore, rats are very organic and clean. Sometimes we call them with very cute name: KFR (Kentucky Fried Rat). Frog is more popular to French people. But here we cook it in our own way, so it’s very different from French one. Also here if you are a fan of beer, they have available cold beer which makes you re-enegize immediately. Another dish is coming after frog and rat which is EGG PLANT in clay pot. Inside is a steaming, bubbling mix of aubergine, minced pork, oyster sauce, spring onion and ginger. We take a sit on a small chair and plastic table while we wait for the dish to heat up – It is worth the wait.
After that, we keep walking 3 minutes to Nem Nuong Hai Van where is the best place to eat in Can Tho. “NEM NUONG” which is sometimes called Pork BBQ rolls. Rice paper, pineapple, small bundles of noodles, banana and a plate of delicious looking barbecue pork sliced in to bite-size chunks, its caramelised skin glistening under a scattering of crushed peanuts. We diligently piled all the ingredients into the rice paper and rolled them in to tight tubes before dipping them into the little ceramic sauce bowl and trying to stuff them into our mouths without dripping the delicious liquid down our shirts. Although there are many types of spring rolls in every town in Vietnam, but they dont contain noodles and fruit like these. The mix of sweet pineapple and savoury fish sauce is gorgeous. Then, we walk around the street food near the riverside and look for dessert. You can choose which one is new, strange and look delicious with uncountable dishes cooked and left on the street such as seafood, pancakes, drinks, sticky rice, smoothie. Our tour guide will show you these things and buy it for you. At the end, if you would like to walk along the riverside or going back to hotel, tour guide will arrange it for you.
