From 1916 to 1925, Khai Dinh ruled as Vietnam’s last imperial king. However, his strong ties to the French made him one of Vietnamese most hated kings.
On September 4, 1920, the construction of Khai Dinh started and was completed a decade later. Many well-known artisans and craftspeople worked on the project, using many exotic materials. Thus, despite having the smallest total area, Khai Dinh Tomb was the most labor-intensive and costly tomb of the Nguyen Dynasty.
When it comes to places to visit in Hue Vietnam, the Mausoleum of Emperor Minh Mang, bearing the nation’s rich history, is a captivating destination that visitors should not miss out on.
Every single mausoleum in Hue has its own long-standing history and this tomb of Minh Mang is no exception.
Minh Mang was a king who made many significant reforms to the country at the time. In his reign, he wanted to build a grand mausoleum to serve as his future resting place. The king started the construction of the mausoleum in 1840. Unfortunately, he passed away before construction was complete.
Not until the time of his successor, King Thieu Tri, was the Mausoleum of Emperor Minh Mang finally built in 1843. It has been preserving the remains of King Minh Mang until today.
Your trip to the romantic city of Hue will not be complete without visiting Tomb of Tu Duc. Nestled in a vast pine forest, this is the emperor’s final resting place, where all the mysteries of his life were buried with him. Let’s take a look at this enigmatic monument and see what lies beyond the gate.
Tomb of Tu Duc was originally named “Van Nien Co” (Palace of Eternity). In order to build the tomb, thousands of people had to work from dawn until midnight in poor conditions, which led to a rebellion.
After the rebellion, the court violently criticized the construction. Tu Duc renamed the tomb to “Khiem Cung”, which meant “Palace of Modesty”. Nowadays, all the buildings in this complex are associated with the word “Khiem”, or “Modest” in English.
Despite its notorious history, Tu Duc tomb Hue is still a sight to behold, consisting of five main parts:
Hue Imperial City, one of the most important structures of the Nguyen Dynasty, holds memories of a powerful feudal era in Vietnam. Visitors to Hue must explore this site to admire the beauty of the timeless architectural structures of the ancient imperial capital.
Imperial City Hue Vietnam is a grand citadel built during the reign of Emperor Gia Long in 1805. The royal court had to mobilize around 30,000 people to work on the river embankments and canals. By 1818, the number of people mobilized had increased to 80,000, focusing on brick cladding on the East, West, South, and North sides.
In 1831-1832, Emperor Minh Mang ordered the construction of additional defensive walls with cannons on the outer layer of the citadel, completing the structure of Hue Imperial City. The walls were used to defend the citadel and repel any potential invader.
Thien Mu Pagoda, one of the most majestic relic sites in the middle of Vietnam, is an excellent destination for international travelers to gain a greater insight into Vietnamese culture as well as to experience spiritual tourism.
Thien Mu Pagoda welcomes tourists from 8.00 am to 6.00 pm everyday; however, it is advised that you visit this location in the morning to easily enjoy the tranquil atmosphere here and comfortably admire the picturesque view of Perfume river as there are not many visitors coming here at that time.
