Dong Xuan, one of the largest markets in Hanoi, is a large market building with hundreds of stalls lining the narrow aisles. With a history dating back to the Nguyen Dynasty, the market today sells everything from clothes, shoes, appliances, to food built by the French government in the late 19th century. But most of the customers travel to the market for sightseeing rather than real shopping.

Coming to Hanoi, the historic house on stilts where President Ho Chi Minh lives and works is one of the places that visitors cannot ignore. In the large garden behind the Presidential Palace, there is a narrow cobblestone path, flanked by mango trees leading to an idyllic small stilt house, amidst the canopy of trees. The hibiscus fence surrounds the house, the gate is made of twigs. Uncle Ho’s stilt house is located in the middle of the garden as a historical evidence associated with President Ho Chi Minh, the elite son of the nation.

Hoa Lo Prison, also known as the Maison Centrale, played an important role in the expansion of French colonial exploitation in Vietnam. Many Vietnamese political prisoners have been tortured and killed here. Later, during the American War, the people of North Vietnam used this place to detain American soldiers.
Founded by the French colonial government in the late 19th century, the yellow façade faded with the years and the building’s blue shutters enveloped the prison nightmares that took place behind the walls. Many revolutionary leaders of Vietnam were imprisoned here, including five comrades later, General Secretary of the Communist Party: Do Muoi, Nguyen Van Cu, Truong Chinh, Le Duan and Nguyen Van Linh. US Senator John McCain was a pilot captured during the Vietnam War and imprisoned for 5 years here. Douglas Peterson, who spent 6 years in prison, became the first ambassador to Vietnam after the war in 1997.
