In the past, most everyone recommended the train because the bus ride was long and miserable. But that all changed in 2014 when Vietnam officially opened to the Hanoi – Lao Cai Expressway. This is a brand new highway that goes directly from Hanoi to Lao Cai (the town at the bottom of Sapa’s mountain – the same place the train ends up).

HOW TO GET HANOI TO SAPA BY BUS
Distance Hanoi – Sapa: 350km
The express bus to Sapa is a very comfortable bus to travel in with many kinds of the bus: Seating bus, Sleeping bus or Limousine Luxury Bus and run at various times : morning, lunch or evening time.
The bus travels in the day, which means you that you can see some pretty spectacular scenery on the drive! It also means that you can get some good sleep in a hotel once you arrive at your destination.
If you want to save time, it’s a great way to choose overnight bus, depart from Hanoi or Sapa 22:00pm.

The Hanoi Sapa bus makes a stop half way through the trip at a servo-type stop point. It is great to stretch the legs for 30 min and grab something cool to drink, and if you are brave, you might want to grab some food there as well!
