Vestige of the Austrian Empire, Miramare Castle is enchantingly located on the Grignano promontory facing the Trieste Gulf on the Adriatic Sea, about 8 km / 5 miles northwest of the most north-easterly city of Italy, Trieste. The Austrian emperor Maximilian of Habsburg (Austrian archduke, and later Emperor of Mexico) commissioned the Viennese architect Carl Junker to build the residential palace between 1856 and 1860, and the castle preserves to this day the furniture and original decorations of the era. Miramare is surrounded by a sea shore park of 22 hectares / 54 acres, characterized by an impressive variety of plants, many of which were specially chosen by the archduke during his travels around the world as admiral of the Austrian Military Marine.

During an individual tour of Miramare Castle, you can explore the former apartments of Archduke Maximilian (later Emperor of Mexico) and his wife Charlotte. The spectacular location of this fairytale castle with its lush park alone is worth a visit – and I will gladly tell you the tragic story of the Archduke who was murdered in Mexico and his mad wife. The name of the castle translates as “looking into the sea." Snow- White, against the background of the turquoise sea and blue sky, amazes with its beauty. Miramare Castle was built in the 19th century. Once here, you can understand why the Austrian Archduke Maximilian chose this place to build a residence for himself and his wife Charlotte. Maximilian, who brought exotic plants from distant countries, created an amazing collection in his park. The park is a completely man-made creation. At the beginning of construction, the castle was surrounded only by almost bare hills, overgrown with bushes. Previously, Miramare Park was also decorated with Egyptian exhibits, one of which, the Sphinx, was preserved near the pier. During the tour, you will hear the romantic and tragic story of Maximilian & Charlotte and you will see and hear about Miramare architectural buildings, plants, ponds, and fountains. The history of the Château d'Amboise dates back to the 11th century, when the Count of Anjou built the castle on the promontory, surveying the Loire River, as a defence strategy. Between the 15th and 16th centuries , under the orders of Charles VII, Louis XII and Francois I, the castle was refurnished. Its magnificent facade can be attributed to Charles VIII and Francois I, and their love for Italian art and style. It was because of this passion for Italian art that Francois I invited Leonardo Da Vinci to come and reside in Amboise as his first painter, architect and engineer. Da Vinci arrived in 1516 and spent the remaining three years of his life living and working in the nearby Chateau du Clos Lucé (connected to the royal chateau by an underground passage). Leonardo Da Vinci died in Amboise and was buried in the Chapel of Saint-Hubert (on the ramparts of the Chateau d'Amboise).
