Lake Atitlan (Lago de Atitlán)

We have brought fun and excitement and mixed it in with the beauty and cultural experiences the lake has to offer. We depart from our office in Panajachel and head over to the colorful village of Santa Catarina Palopo. In this village we are able to see and learn about local weavings, blankets, nahuales and other goods made and sold by the locals. At the plaza of this village, we visit a local coffee house where you can grind your own coffee and taste the locally grown beans. Once finished in Santa Catarina we hop back on our ATVs to the village of San Antonio Palopo. We visit local ceramic factory where we learn about the process to make all these incredible goods. The Lake Atitlan Sunset Tour is one of the best afternoon activities you can do while visiting Lake Atitlan, you were able to visit some villages around the lake and see amazing views of it.

This tour will be an immersion in the communal farms of the indigenous Mayan Tz'utujiles where we will learn about local ecological coffee techniques and the entire process step by step from planting, grain and cup. We will also walk through the streets of the colorful town of San Juan and among the coffee plots so we will get to know the history of coffee and its connection with indigenous communities.

If you are visiting the southern part of Lake Atitlan this is a tour you cannot miss. This tour will take you to mountain tops and lookouts of San Pedro la Laguna. Here we visit a few look outs located above the village where we are able to enjoy great views of San Pedro and San Juan La Laguna, the lake, and the Indian Nose aka “Rostro Maya or Nariz del Indio”. After the look outs of San Pedro we have our longest drive of the tour going all the way to San Marcos la Laguna passing the town of San Juan and San Pablo La Laguna. In San Marcos we visit the Natural Reserve of “Cerro Tzankujil”, where we can take a swim on the lake or enjoy the views from the rock / mountain formations. After enjoying some time at the natural reserve we will hop back on our ATVs and head back to San Juan La Laguna, where we visit the famous lookout named “Kaqasiiwaan” viewpoint.To get to the actual lookout we have to hike about 15 minutes up the steps which takes us there.

San Juan La Laguna is a colorful town located on the shores of Lake Atitlán that offers many interesting things to do during your visit. We are going to walk through the street of umbrellas and the street of hats, we will take photographs with beautiful and colorful murals, we will also share brief workshops on cocoa, coffee, bees and Mayan textiles with natural dyes and the backstrap loom technique. We will also visit the Catholic church and the Kiaqasiwan viewpoint. It will be an authentic experience where we will get to know the local Mayan culture very closely.

You will explore Lake Atitlan in a fun and interesting way by the hand of local people who will be happy to share their lifestyle and traditions.

This hike very known will guide you through stunning views, so be prepared. We will begin from Santa Cruz la Laguna and will end in San Marcos la Laguna. It is a up and down trail 9 km long. The rey Tepepul trail is located in the mountains that connects the Pacific of Guatemala, the type of forest is cloudy and you walk for about 3 kilometers that will take about 3 hours approximately it is recommended to have a good condition.
